Our Therapists
A Center for Therapy, and its affiliates, Arista Counseling, Affiliated Psychotherapists, and a Center for Change, includes a group of warm, experienced, licensed, highly trained mental health professionals dedicated to the delivery of high quality service, providing the compassionate, quality mental health care in a confidential professional atmosphere.
Our mental health professionals include experienced licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage counselors, family therapists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, clinical social workers and professional counselors. These therapists have post-degree training which equips them with the skills necessary to provide help to each of their patients. They strive to help each patient achieve their goals. To assure the most individualized service, they match the treatment to the patient, not the patient to the treatment. As such, each patient receives personalized individual care from a professional who is concerned about their welfare. Therapy is provided in a respectful, confidential atmosphere by a warm, caring therapist or marriage counselor who is active, goal-oriented and non-judgmental.
Our practice includes therapists trained and experienced in a variety of therapies and specialties. For example, some therapists provide brief, problem-solving therapy, others provide longer-term depth therapy, and some integrate both approaches. Some are trained in hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and other specific approaches. Some therapists have extensive experience treating children and adolescents; others specialize in treating adults, families, or in relationship counseling. Our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management, when medically necessary, for anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and other problems. Judith Gurfein, Ph.D., ABPP, APRN-BC, the director of Arista, is a psychologist with over 25 years of experience in individual, family, marital, and couples therapy. Dr. Gurfein is an Assistant Clinical Professor at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where she supervises psychiatric residents and is a board certified diplomate in Marriage and Family Psychology from the American Psychological Association. She is the author of several chapters in textbooks in the field of psychology, the co-editor of a journal and has had numerous radio and television appearances including ABC, CBS, Fox and, NBC news. Dr. Gurfein is a graduate of the New York University Post-Doctoral Program in Psychotherapy, and has training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Her training in Marriage and Family Therapy includes training with Dr. Salvador Menuchin and her training in Substance Abuse Relapse Prevention includes training with Terrance Gorski. Dr. Gurfein first began her career as a child and adolescent psychologist, serving for ten years as chairperson of the child study team and school psychologist in the Tri State areas public and private schools. Dr. Gurfein has prescriptive privileges as a psychiatric nurse practitioner and offers medication only when medically necessary and desired by the patient. As a consultant to business, Dr. Gurfein has provided executive coaching and training in interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, systems thinking and group process, stress and change management.

Dr. Susan Chartoff, is a dually licensed psychologist with prescriptive privileges as a psychiatric nurse practitioner and more than 25 years experience providing individual, marriage and couples therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, multimodal therapy, hypnotherapy and stress management in the Northern New Jersey area. She is the Director of Affiliated Psychotherapists: A Center for Change and is ANCC board certified in both adult and family (child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) mental health/psychiatry. Dr. Chartoff completed a post-doctoral training program in multimodal psychotherapy at the Multimodal Therapy Institute under the directorship of Dr. Arnold Lazarus. Dr. Chartoff pursued post-doctoral training in marriage and family counseling and psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety, depression and other disorders, solution oriented therapy, psychodynamic therapy, hypnotherapy, stress management techniques, advanced psychopharmacology and other topics. She has assisted in psychiatric resident training at Kings County Hospital, Downstate Medical Center, and has provided psychological services to Rutgers University College, Rutgers Center for Alcohol Studies, and the New Jersey Departments of Vocational Rehabilitation and Disabilities Determinations. She is on the professional attending staff of Hackettstown Community Hospital and has provided clinical supervision to both doctoral and master’s level mental health professionals for many years.

Dr. Marvin Chartoff, the founding Director of Affiliated Psychotherapists, is a licensed psychologist with over 25 years experience providing individual, marriage and family counseling for children, adolescents and adults. He is listed in the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology and is certified (ASPPB-CPQ) by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. Dr Chartoff is a member of the professional attending staff of Hackettstown Community Hospital. He completed post-doctoral training in child and adolescent psychotherapy, adult psychotherapy, marriage and couples counseling, family therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnotherapy, stress management, adult and child ADHD evaluation and treatment, substance abuse, and many other topics. Dr. Chartoff has been frequently interviewed for local television, radio, and newspapers, and has often provided psychological education to the Northern New Jersey area on various topics through many adult education programs and community organizations. He has years of experience as psychologist in the New Jersey schools at both the elementary and secondary level, as well as experience as chairman of the Child Study Team. Adult and Geriatric PsychiatryDr. Seth Fielding graduated from Chicago Medical School. He is currently on the staff of two major New York City medical facilities: The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. Dr Fielding has certification in psychotherapy from the William Alanson White Institute, which is one of the foremost psychoanalytic and psychotherapy programs in the country. He currently holds a supervisory position at the William Alanson White Institute. Dr. Fielding's former supervisory positions include the Center for Anorexia and Bulimia and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP).
